Blogpoll: Week 5

New to the Poll:
Connecticut (#21)
Fresno State (#23)
Michigan State (#24)
Northwestern (#25)

Dropped Out:
Wake Forest (#16)
Clemson (#19)
TCU (#23)
East Carolina (#24)

Waiting In the Wings:
  • Kentucky: Undefeated but with little to no competition and a scare against Middle Tennessee. A win against Bama certainly puts the Wildcats in, and probably in the mid teens.
  • Oregon/Wake Forest/Virginia Tech: All teams with impressive preseason expectations, all with surprising early season losses. Are they among the 25 best teams in the country? Probably. Are they showing it? No.
  • Maryland: A loss to Middle Tennessee the only blemish, with upsets against then-ranked Cal and then-ranked Clemson (on the road). A big win against Virginia and the Terps might be in.
  • North Carolina: Matchup against Connecticut this weekend. A win and the Heels will be making an appearance next week.
Explanations/Odds/Ends/What-Have-Yous
  • The poll this week is probably all hands on deck on the failboat. The weekend itself was dramatic in that so many quality teams lost, and yet, we learned nothing. By having so many teams shat the bed on the same weekend, the individual blow to each team is lessened. Florida and Clemson paid the highest price, but USC wasn't far behind. Georgia didn't fall quite so far, namely because Alabama is just that good.
  • The Big 12, unlike the SEC, is very top heavy. As such, the 4 best teams will continue to look impressive. The conference is good, but top to bottom, give me the SEC. And it's sweet, tasty, sexy speed.
  • The biggest gains this week, outside of Alabama, were Penn State and Connecticut. Both good teams, both awful conferences. UConn needed some late game heroics to beat Louisville, and UConn fans need to hope that was their trap game and they got through it.
Games Watched:
A significantly smaller schedule as I instead watched cardboard boxes and UHauls. However, I was able to catch: Notre Dame-Purdue, Clemson-Maryland, Florida-Ole Miss (partial), Georgia-Alabama, Virginia Tech-Nebraska
