For those that need motivation...

We're roughly 8 hours from the Ball State/Central Michigan kickoff and in case you're in need of a little extra motivation today, OTP is proud to present some classic coaching moments. This game won't be won on blogs, it won't be won on Central Michigan fansites forecasting a two TD outing from the Cardinal offense. It won't be won by the talking heads on ESPN2, one of whom is a CMU alum. Thankfully for CMU it won't be won via spelling bee either. Fire up Cards fans... it's time to let folks know we're for real.

Coach Gaines - "Friday Night Lights"

Pros- Reference to an injured player, as well as hitting what I believe to be the single greatest thing about this team... the togetherness. Clear eyes, full hearts.

Al Pacino - "Inches", Any Given Sunday

Pros- One of the best lockerroom speeches of all times.
Cons- Given to a team in trouble struggling to get it together. Holy shit! What is Ray Charles doing in that football uniform!?!

Herb Brooks - "Miracle"

Pros- Applicable a bit to our situation in that the Chips, much like those dirty Soviet bastards have been a perrenial thorn in our ass for the last several years. They win MAC titles, we don't. We want to. "Great moments are born from great opportunity" and this is truly the greatest opportunity in program history. "This is your time. Their time? It's done. I'm sick and tired of hearing what a great program they have. Screw 'em. This is our time. Now go out there and take it."
Cons-Hard to focus with Kurt Russel's dreamy hair and tight plaid pants, plus it's hockey and who gives a shit about that?

Steve Lattimer - "The Program"

DING MOTHERFUCKING DONG, indeed.

Didn't 'The Program' have just about everything in that movie? Substance abuse, troubled family life, and a conflicting romance... and that was just Joe Kane. Then we have Lattimer (Canseco), James Caan (questionable casting decision), and Dr. Foreman from 'House' (who apparently took that B+ all the way to med school). Throw in a budding Halle Berry, the fat guy from 'Parker Lewis Can't Lose' and Buffy the Vampire Slayer - why is this movie not among the classics???

Indeed... that's a great scene from the movie, but Kyle Chandler does the locker room speech better than any other actor in history.

"Clear eyes... full hearts... CAN'T LOSE!"

(Yes, I'll admit to getting goosebumps every time that happens on "FNL"...)

BTW, if you ever want to feel epic while you're getting dressed or cleaning your living room, download several songs by Explosions in the Sky... they're the Austin-based band you hear in the background of that Billy Bob Thornton scene you linked, and they score the TV show as well. Great stuff.
